I am extremely annoyed by what some of the younger generation consider “activism” and being “conscious.” Basically they are reading material that was meant to enlighten us about our history in America and using it to turn their backs on the realities of the globalization of the world today.
My understanding of the Universe is at an extremely spiritual level. I have enough difficulty even identifying with having a “physical” body to look after – let alone worrying about what color skin it has and whether that makes me an African when I clearly was born in America to American parents whose history in this country stretches back for centuries. If you must identify yourself geographically – rather than as an earthling – do so and use your own set of values to inform your decision. But don’t impose your pedestrian view upon me under the guise of you being enlightened. When in fact you may just be a wet behind the ears kid who is 12 years behind (in your revolutionary reading material) those you seek to educate.
If you are still seeing this “physical world” as a construct of physical matter we can’t even really go “there” in a so called deep conversation anyway. To attempt to tell me I am an African based on something you read at the library when you don’t even have a passport annoys me on many levels. First it ignores the opinions of other diverse groups and how they choose to see themselves based on their culture while basing culture on skin color. Secondly it supposes that there is some “true” way to view nationality anyway. Call yourself what you want and respect me enough to allow me to do the same.
If you can’t see what you have in common with people who look NOTHING like you, you may just be missing the whole point of being human anyway.
